Visual Interference in the Peripheral Recognition of Embedded Letters

Abstract

If a single letter is presented eccentric to the point of fixation, its recognizability decreases as eccentricity increases. If two or more letters are presented simultaneously and close together, lower recognition scores are obtained. This phenomena of lateral interference has been confirmed in the parafoveal. In the present study we examined this phenomena in the periphery (from near periphery to middle periphery). As a result, it is also confirmed in this region of retina. And it is observed that lateral interference occurs from periphery toward fovea and is maximal in case when embedded letters are presented along the meridians and is minimum in case when embedded letters are presented along the radius of the visual field.
