Abstract
A digital sound transmission system for television broadcasting via satellite has been developed. A digitally-modulated subcarrier is used for the transmission of sounds and data. This system provides four high-quality 14/10 bit near-instantaneous companding sounds sampled at 32kHz or two high-quality 16bit linear-coded sounds sampled at 48kHz. Data service such as facsimile is also available.
Furthermore, the sound reception quality is better than the corresponding picture quality until at least the grade of 1.5 is reached on a five-grade picture evaluation scale.
