A Lossless Image Coding Scheme Based on a 3-D Markov Model

Abstract

Many schemes concerned with the lossless coding of continuous-tone still pictures have been proposed recently, and the coding scheme based on a Markov model is very effective. In this paper we propose a lossless coding scheme based on a 3-D Markov model in which correlations between bitplanes are utilized. The results of computer simulation showed that the 3-D Markov model entropy with 12 reference elements is lower than the conventional Markov model entropy with one reference pixel by 8 % at its maximum.
