Abstract

Reflective LCDs have advantages of low power consumption, light weight and thinness. However, they have poor image quality including darkness, low contrast ratio, poor color reconstruction and narrow viewing angle. A reflective STN-LCD (super twisted nematic-liquid crystal display) using a blazed reflector and with the light scattering material between the display and the reflector is proposed. Key features include almost a doubling in brightness and contrast ratio due to reflection of the image toward the normal direction of the display and misalignment of the image and surface reflection. To obtain white representation, we optimize the scattering properties and compensate the retardation when the light impinge at an oblique angle.
