Abstract
In Japan, digital HDTV services via broadcasting satellite will start in 2000,and terrestrial digital broadcasting services are planned to start in after the year 2000. MPEG-2 standard has been adopted as a video coding scheme for these services. We investigate improvement methods of coding efficiency maintaining high picture quality. In MPEG-2 coding scheme, motion vectors are transmitted as differentials between vectors in adjacent macro-blocks. We show in this paper that the amount of transmitted motion vectors can be reduced by consolidated zero differential values, improving the PSNR of decoded pictures.
