Abstract
NHK Archives is scheduled to open in 2003. The retrieval system, which allows stored video programs to be searched and previewed by using PCs, is its essential function. We have been studying a retrieval system for video archives. The core of the system is a hierarchical storage management system(HSMS), which makes use of a combination of hard disks for high-speed data access and low-cost tape streamers with large storage capacity. We constructed an experimental retrieval system using the proposed HSMS, and tested its functions. The HSMS was found to be effective for the retrieval system for a large amount of video archive material.
