Abstract
In reflective color STN-LCDs, it is necessary to achieve achromatic representation in single polarizer STN-LCD modes which are used in them. We developed an optimization method for optical components of the signle polarizer STN-LCD modes in order to achieve achromatic representation. Applying it, we have proved that a normally white (NW) mode can be realized as well as a normally black (NB) mode which are usually used in current reflective color STN-LCDs. Comparing the viewing angle characteristics of NW and NB modes, we found that those of NW mode is better than those of NB mode. Especially, high reflectance can be realized even at a larger viewing angle in NW mode.
