Abstract
This paper descrives market and application of today's MO as well as its future trend. The market growth has been 30% per year since 1994 and installed-base of the 3.5in.MO will be well over 7.5 million units of drive and 100 million pcs of media by the end of year 2000. Major application concept has been "DataSave/DataKeep" which temporarily stores files of text-document and digital-image document. The introduction of the GigaMO, based on the MSR-media technology, will provide not only 2 〜 3GB but even 5GB capacity in a surface of 3.5in.MO. Improvement of MO media technology and blue laser will achieve 30GB capacity in 3.5in MO, which will open new MO application in digital motion picture environment.
