Abstract
To investigate whether the dissociation of vergence and accommodation is responsible for visual fatigue in watching stereoscopic images, we studied the visual fatigue after approximately one hour of watching a simulated stereoscopic image system using prisms. Fatigue was assessed by subjective reports of symptoms, accommodation step responses, relative vergence limits, and visual evoked potentials (VEP). The results showed that when the amount of dissociation is large or it changes over time, the heavy visual load causes visual fatigue, and that properly designed stereoscopic images do not cause severe visual fatigue.
