Abstract
In connection with the property of the human visual system, we have explored a contour artifact in high bit depth TFT-LCD imaging system which has R:G:B=10:10:10bits in tone scale reproduction ability. It has been widely accepted that R:G:B=8:8:8bits in tone scale can cover most high quality application of displays. However it was pointed out a couple of years ago that R:G:B=10:12:9bits in tone scale is require to achieve reality-reproduction by the display. In this report, comparing conventional R:G:B=8:8:8bits system, we discuss visibility of contour artifact based on our R:G:B=10:10:10bits LCD system developed. In our experiment, the system has good ability in tone scale reproduction, and thus improved contour artifacts visibility, though there still be small amount of contour artifact observed even in 10 bits system. This visibility of the contour artifact must relate to the properties of the human visual system such as special frequency response, contrast sensitivity property and light adaptation property. At least these three property of the human visual system have to be discussed to determine what high picture quality display system is.
