Abstract

This paper presents the new consumer VCR format, MICROMV, and the high density recording technique for this format. Applying MR(Magneto-resistive) head to the helical tape drive, we have successfully recorded the areal density of 0.8 Gbit/inch^2, which is more than 3 times as large as that of the conventional DVC format. The small size cassette of 12cc volume using a 3.8 mm width Co-O evaporated tape stores one hour MPEG2 picture of 12Mbps rate, which corresponds to 6.5 giga bytes of data. We also developed the technique of power transmission to rotary drum and the method to compensate amplitude asymmetry of MR head output signal.
