Abstract
Computer-generated characters are often seen these days on TV programs, in movies and so forth. They are called "synthetic" , "digital" or "virtual" actors and many of them are based on model-based computer graphics (CG). In model-based approaches, however, there is a trade-off between reality and model complexity. On the other hand, many recent studies have been made on image-based CG characterized by its visual reality. In this paper we introduce a new type of synthetic actor, which we call " 2D Image-Based Synthetic Actor" in accordance with the present state of CG technology. Our new synthetic actor has a high level of visual reality and can be made much more easily than a model-based synthetic actor by using a number of images acquired by filming a real actor.
