Abstract
This paper proposed a new caricaturing method of facial expression using a small set of characteristic points on facial parts. Some caricaturing portraits were produced from facial images using this method. An experiment of the face recognition was carried out using the portraits and the recognition rates were measured about two facial expressions of 'normal (expressionless)' and 'joy (laughter)'. As a result, a high recognition rate of 97 % was obtained. Next, two evaluation experiments of five facial expressions of 'joy', 'anger', 'surprise', 'sadness', and 'normal' were carried out in the portraits and its original images. It is found that the perceived expressions were in good agreement with the presented expressions except for that of 'anger' and 'sadness'. The results obtained showed that the proposed method is effective for the expressions of 'joy', 'surprise', and 'normal'.
