Abstract
A novel method for detecting local picture defects of transmitted video based on extraction of image features is proposed for realization of automatic remote monitoring of digital television transmission network. Image features are extracted from each small pixel block in the transmitted and received pictures to estimate the picture quality degradation in the small region of the received picture. Picture defects caused by the MPEG bitstream errors are detected by the estimated local degradations. Computer simulations show that 100% detection of presence of picture defects in the frame is possible at a bitrate of 425kbps of reference path.
