Abstract
The authors have developing a coloring technique for plain maps with a watercolor-painting style, which aims at an automatic generation of images for city planning, a conception of public works, and so on. In particular, this paper focuses on a technique for coloring mountain regions in a map, which was not realized in our previous report. The technique comprises three fundamental techniques: warping and mapping of a colored texture image, realization of a stereoscopic effect by shading, and generation of features of watercolor paintings by using the distance transformation and the alpha-blending techniques. An effective algorithm has been obtained to generate a high-quality colored map.
