Abstract
Hand raising actions can be considered as the initial stage of communications between humans and a robot including greeting, approval and alert. Their recognition will help to develop applications such as a service robot, remote education and assistance to physically handicapped people. This paper proposes a recognition method of hand raising actions for users sitting at arbitrary positions in the room, where multiple tables are arranged. Color of each user's clothes is captured by a camera at the entrance of the room and a laser range finder is installed at a corner of the room to obtain the range information. Both informations are utilized to detect the hand raising actions and to identify the hand raising user by a stereo camera mounted on a robot.
