Abstract
We have developed a transparent liquid crystal display (LCD)with three states: "transparent", "white (colored)" and "black". We have also developed a new ITE LCD mode of high speed response that applies the field sequential color (FSC) method. Our transparent display has the following properties: (1) high transmittance, because it has no color filter, (2) high color purity, because it can display colors from LEDs directly, and (3) no blurring, because it has no diffraction of light. We can see the background through the display clearly without blurring. A clear light guide plate is placed behind the LCD and, when LEDs located on the edge of the light guide plate light, the incident light from the LEDs scatters, whereby realizing the white state.
