Abstract
FTV (Free-viewpoint Television) enables users to view a 3D scene by freely changing the viewpoint. FTV is the ultimate 3DTV with an infinite number of views and ranks as the top of visual media in the world. MPEG has been developing FTV standards since 2001. As the third phase of FTV, the current MPEG-FTV targets revolutionized 3D viewing by super multiview, free navigation and 360-degree 3D. As for super multiview and free navigation, “Call for Evidence” to verify the existence of new technology was successfully completed and preparation of “Call for Proposals” started. FTV framework based on MVD (Multi-view plus depth) and MVS (Multi-view plus surface) 3D scene representations, and progress of FTV standardization are presented. Furthermore, 3D technology at SIGGRAPH 2016 are reported. MVS enables view synthesis under various reflectance, transparency and lighting conditions.
