Objective: This study aimed to clarify the components of nursesʼ moral strength and the relationship between the components.
Method: Convenience sampling was employed to select 14 certified nurse specialists (CNS) and pre-CNSs from different fields. Semi-structured interviews were used. The data were analyzed qualitatively and inductively. .
Results: The following nine components were identified as the moral strengths of the nurses: (1) Respecting the patient's will, (2) improving the patient's quality of life, (3) helping the patient and their family bond, (4) readiness to face problems, (5) fulfilling one's responsibilities, (6) standing up for one's beliefs, (7) courage to take the first step, (8) perseverance to work earnestly, and (9) inspired by the patient and family..
When these nine elements were compared, they were based on the patient-centered approaches of components (1) to (3). Based on this, the moral attitude of components (4) to (8) and the moral responsibility of component (9) were viewed as the energetic elements that motivate individuals to actual action. Conclusion: As a component of the nurses' moral strength, a patient-centered way of thinking is considered as the foundation for defining will and motivation. On this basis, the strength of will and motivation were added as a moral attitude, and these will-related matters were considered as the center of moral strength. Factors that strengthened the functioning of the will and human virtues, which are part of moral attitude and sensitivity, the latter being a moral response, were related to and promoted moral strength.
