Culture and the arts are considered to be one of the growth industries in Europe and the United States, while economic revitalization that utilize cultural resources was mentioned in the “Future Investment Strategy 2017” and estimation of the cultural GDP has been started in Japan. This paper introduces the “UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics” and explains the basic idea for estimating Japan's cultural GDP based on it. We also discuss future challenges for estimating cultural GDP, such as building more comprehensive cultural satellite accounts.
