Abstract

Whereas the issue of gender inequality in the Japanese art world has been highlighted, to the best of our knowledge, no survey or analysis has addressed this issue from the perspective of the structure of the contemporary art world. Therefore, an interview survey of primary galleries is conducted in this study, which reveals the activities of galleries in Japan. Additionally, based on Becker (1982=2016), the gender gap in the contemporary art world is discussed in terms of the scarcity of female artists.
