In post-war Japan, images related to the international music festival were first created by three seminal events: The Osaka International Festival (1958-present), Gendai Ongakusai (The Modern Music Festival; 1957-1965), and The Tokyo East-West Music Encounter (1961). After reporting my findings on these three festivals, I will consider the acceptance of international music festivals in Japan. In addition, I will establish the basic features of international music festivals, from the post-war period to their peak in the 1990s. To do this, I will rely on information I gathered from a survey on Japanese music festivals I conducted in 1999.
