Abstract
English for specific purposes (ESP) as an academic field can be considered. to have begun with work in the early 1960's with the examination of “scientific” English. This paper presents a brief review of ESP history, a look into some of its issues, an overview of ESP in the Japanese university environment, and some examples of actual classroom lesson plans for students majoring in science and technology.
