Abstract
This paper re-examines the formation process of coaching, focusing on the complex origins detailed in Leni Wildflower’s The Hidden History of Coaching (2013). Coaching did not emerge from a single discipline; rather, it was established as diverse intellectual traditions—including Self-help, the Human Potential Movement, Eastern philosophy, and psychology—intersected around the pursuit of human transformation. By tracing this history, the paper argues that contemporary coaching research should move beyond a purely psychological focus and adopt a more multidimensional perspective that incorporates history of thought and social context to deepen our understanding of coaching as a practice.
