The purpose of this study was to characterize elderly patients aged 75 or older who did not fall within the range of glycemic targets for elderly patients with diabetes (HbA1c values). A total of 113 patients were divided into two groups according to whether they fell within the target range, and chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed for the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment domains. The group not falling within the target range was significantly more likely to have a low BMI, be in a poor nutritional state, and have a depressive tendency. Analysis by gender showed that, among male patients, the group not falling within the target range was significantly more likely to be in a poor nutritional state, have a depressive tendency, and use drugs potentially associated with severe hypoglycemia. In addition, patients in the group above the glycemic targets were significantly more likely to have a low BMI, be in a poor nutritional state, have a depressive tendency, and be female.
This study found that elderly patients aged 75 or older who did not fall within the range of targets were characterized by having a low BMI, being in a poor nutritional state, and having a depressive tendency, highlighting the importance of care guidance focused on these findings to prevent the transition to geriatric syndrome.
