Significance of Creating Archives at Small Privately-run Theaters

Abstract

  In recent years, the expansion of performing arts archives has been gaining significant momentum, with various ambitious projects being launched to create digital archives or related initiatives. However, not much is known about the efforts of domestic theaters and other cultural facilities to collect, preserve, and utilize relevant resources.

  In light of this situation, this study examined the significance of and challenges associated with creating archives at privately-run small theaters by conducting an overview survey of archiving activities at member facilities of the National Small Theatre Network and examining a case study of an advanced project, “THEATRE E9 KYOTO: Archive of Performed Works.”
