Abstract

A series of earthquakes struck the Republic of Turkey on February 6, 2023, causing severe damage to cities along the fault lines. In response to the request from the Turkish Government, Sentinel Asia activated the event on the same day, providing emergency satellite observation and data. In this study, using ALOS-2 images obtained through emergency observations by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and archive images under the same condition, damaged buildings in urban areas were extracted. By calculating the difference and correlation coefficient of backscatter coefficients from the pre- and post-event ALOS-2 intensity images and their combined index z, we identified severely damaged buildings and estimated the damage ratios of block levels in the central Kahramanmaraş. We further attempted to improve the accuracy of identifying affected buildings by utilizing both HH and HV polarizations. The extracted results were compared with the building damage map compiled by Kahramanmaraş Provincial Government, and accuracy assessment was conducted.
