In this study, crustal deformation in Tateno and Kawayo districts of Minami-Aso Village was estimated based on a three-dimensional (3D) topographic difference method, using airborne laser scanning data observed in two periods, before and after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. 3D co-seismic displacements were calculated from the spatial correlation of the original and ground point-cloud data observed by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI), based on the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm. The results were affected by local ground movements such as slope failures and cracks, as well as building collapses, and depended on the size of the calculation window. But a reasonable level of accuracy was obtained compared to the observed displacements for the case of estimation from the ground point-cloud data at the survey control points.
