Abstract
An intense earthquake occurred in Pakistan at 8: 28 local time, October 8, 2005. The epicenter was in North Eastern Frontier Area that is northern mountainous area of Pakistan and the magnitude was 7.6. Geotechnical engineering laboratory and Koseki laboratory of the University of Tokyo organized a field examination team to investigate the damage of this earthquake in collaboration with University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. This report outlines the findings obtained during October 25 to 28 and November 19 to 24 in devastated areas; Islamabad, Abbottabad, Balakot and Muzaffarabad. Many collapsed buildings due to an earthquake motion and ground movement were confirmed in Balakot and Muzaffarabad which are located within about 30 km of the epicenter. In addition, there were a large number of landslides in mountainous area. The number of victims of the earthquake amounts to more than 75, 000 as of January, 2006.
