Abstract

Based on recent reports from the field of digestive surgery, laparoscopic surgery has made rapid progress and its use has also become widespread for emergency abdominal diseases. Laparoscopic surgery for abdominal emergencies has made it possible to make a precise diagnosis, and thereby avoiding unnecessary abdominal open surgery while, at the same time, laparoscopic surgery also offers some advantages for choosing the optimal treatment during the operation. However, there are also various problems associated with this type of surgery, such as the lack of proper facilities or instruments and insufficient experience on the part of medical staff members when performing emergency surgery and, as a result, laparoscopic surgery is thus frequently avoided. In our hospital, laparoscopic was introduced in 2004 and has been used since. Now, doctors qualified by the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery are establishing guidance systems and education systems based on Peer Teaching which is conducted by the staff surgeons for trainee doctors. We report herein on our preparations for the use of laparoscopic surgery to treat abdominal emergencies and also describe our newly established education system to provide appropriate instruction and guidance to trainee doctors.
