Abstract
In incarcerated hernia case, delay in the diagnosis and treatment decision sometimes leads to serious complications such as sepsis, peritonitis and intestinal ischemia. Therefore, an early diagnosis and treatment decision are important. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of 35 patients with incarcerated hernia who required emergency or semi-emergency operations in our hospital from April 2008 to March 2011. They were divided into two groups: the bowel resection group (the A group: n=15) and the non-resection group (he B group: n=20). As for the time to diagnosis and blood tests, there were no significant differences between the two groups. Ileus findings based on CT scans were significantly higher in the A group. Furthermore, contrast enhanced CT scans showed high sensitivity in decreased enhancement of the intestinal wall. Contrast enhanced CT scans may be required for determining the therapeutic strategy in cases of incarcerated hernia.
