Abstract
Under the single non-transferable vote (SNTV) system, multiple candidates are elected in single district. Thus, parties which nominate multiple candidates in one district, have to adopt two kinds of strategies. First, they have to find optimal number of candidates. Second, they should make the number of votes for their candidates as equally as possible. Existing studies have discussed about these strategies by analyzing the behavior of Japan and Taiwan’s major parties. These studies tend to focus on the feature of the parties’ organization; concentrated or deconcentrated. In this paper, I focus on the level of the local organization’s development. I test how two major parties in South Korea execute strategy in election of local council member. The result suggest that parties tend to differentiate between candidates in the aspect of gender and age, especially where their local organization is less developed.
