Abstract
This paper describes the status of fuel irradiation research and development in Japan, including the activities of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), the Atomic Fuel Corporation and of five industrial consortia. Experience on fuel irradiation obtained by these organizations are described, such as fuel irradiation experiments nuclear and thermodynamic problems, materials and structual design problems and the difficulties that will have to be smoothed out in order to proceed further with fuel irradiation in Japan. Results obtained from the irradiation of fuels in JAERI and abroad, and future plans for fuel irradiation are also described.
