Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the scope of assignment that medical interpreters are allowed to use their own judgement, such as deleting and adding in interpretation. The survey assuming 29 medical settings was carried out by a Web questionnaire in July 2018. Effective answers were collected from 300 nurses. As a result, it was found that medical interpreters can use their own judgement at a reception dealing with patients and giving guidance, but not in telling diagnosis of diseases and explaining medication. On factor analysis, three factors were found and named each as assignment for “diagnosis”, “reception and guidance”, and “payment procedure”. It can be said that when the health risk of the assignment is low and the range of assignment is wide, it is possible for medical interpreters to use their own judgement in their interpretation.
