Activated carbon fiber (ACF) with enhanced phosphates ion adsorption performance was prepared by cellulose-based activated carbon fiber (KF1500LDA) modified with amines. The raw material KF1500LDA was oxidized with hydrogen peroxide solution for 2 h and then reacted with diethylenetriamine (N1-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethenediamine) at 10°C for 6 hours to maximize the phosphates ion adsorption amount. The maximum adsorption amount achieved 0.13 mmol/g when the equilibrium pH (pHe) was 3.0. The specific surface area of the diethylenetriamine-modified sample was 1603 m2/g. Elemental analysis showed that the nitrogen content increased to 2.8 wt%, about 1.8 times greater than that of the raw material.
