Abstract

Ujoh Bilang City is the new capital city that planned as The Capital City of Mahakam Ulu Regency, East Kalimantan Province. The city located on the Mahakam Ulu Riverbank. Mahakam River becomes an important part in shaping a culture of Dayak People (indigenous people) who lived in Ujoh Bilang City. The natural condition and cultural traditions of Dayak People create strong local landscape characters for this city. In the midst of urbanization and current urban development, cultural traditions (river oriented) of Dayak People currently helps to maintain the sustainability of cultural landscape in Ujoh Bilang City. The various of cultural landscape characters which can be found in Ujoh Bilang City consist of; river (unge), villages, farmlands, former farmlands (jekau), forest (mpa'/mba'), protected forest (tana'ulen), garden, and cemetery. The purpose of this paper is to describe a local character of river based cultural landscape concept and to describe the river based cultural traditions of Dayak People that has been exist and became an important part of historical evidence in preserving and protecting nature to maintain the sustainability of Ujoh Bilang City.
