Abstract
This study, part of a broader investigation into communication in team meetings, examines the impact of small talk between members in online meetings on psychological distance and psychological safety, as well as how virtuality affects these relationships. The goal is to determine how the topic of conversations during online meetings influences psychological distance and safety and how virtuality moderates this effect. Previous research on small talk has primarily focused on face-to-face interactions, with limited exploration of the psychological effects in virtual settings. An online survey was conducted with 400 individuals who use telework for team meetings to address this gap. The results showed that both business and personal updates were effective in increasing psychological safety to a certain degree, regardless of whether virtuality was high or low. On the other hand, when virtuality was low, the work situation of members can be seen, so it is thought that it would be more effective to share the latest updates on individuals.
