〔Aims〕We aimed to develop a self-evaluation index for the assessment of the role performances of clinical nursing instructors and to examine its validity and reliability.
〔Methods〕A questionnaire survey containing 31 items was designed based on a previous study and was subsequently conducted on clinical nursing instructors to extract a self-evaluation index. The known-groups technique, factor analysis, and correlation coefficient between the index and the Japanese version of the Effective Clinical Teaching Behaviors(ECTB)inventory were used to examine the validity of the index; its reliability was evaluated by Cronbach’sα and item-total correlations.
〔Results〕In total, 1,175 responses were collected. Factor analysis identified a six-factor structure including cooperation with ward staff, cooperation with nursing faculty members, supporting student nurses’ practice, preparation for instructing students in clinical settings, role modeling in clinical nursing practice and empathetic attitude toward students. The respondents attending clinical nursing instructor training sessions had significantly higher total index values than those failing to attend. Besides, a strong positive correlation was found between total index values and the Japanese ECTB inventory. Cronbach’s α coefficient for the six factors ranged from 0.792 to 0.843, and no item had an item-total correlation coefficient less than 0.300.
〔Conclusions〕Our index was confirmed to be valid and reliable; thus, it might serve as a useful tool for self-evaluation of clinical nursing instructors’ role performances.
