Abstract

〔Aims〕To clarify the perceptions of university faculty and newly graduated nurses of the introduction of the university faculty-mentoring system, and to provide fundamental data.

〔Methods〕This study was conducted with the approval of the ethics review committee of Fukuoka Prefectural University. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven university faculty members and ten newly graduated nurses from eleven nursing colleges that are members of a consortium of universities in Region A. A qualitative, inductive analysis was performed on the interviews.

〔Results〕Faculty members’ perceptions of support for newly graduated nurses from other colleges and universities consisted of five items, including “essential mentor qualities and mindset”. Newly graduated nurses’ perceptions of receiving support from faculty from other universities comprised three items, including “mentorship and expectations for university faculty”. University faculty members perception of the challenges related to adopting and using a mentorship program consisted of 4 categories, including “arrangements for operating the program and publicity”, while responses from newly graduated nurses comprised five items, including reassuring university faculty responses.

〔Conclusions〕Both university faculty and newly graduated nurses had positive attitudes about the possibility and necessity of a university faculty-mentoring program. However, some concerns and challenges were identified in giving it shape. To implement the program, it is suggested that institutional support needs to be provided to establish program structures and a mentoring environment, in addition to university faculty in the role of mentors.
