Abstract
The mission-oriented approach to innovation attracted attention in Sweden and the EU to help address the profound issues facing society, such as climate change. This study investigates the types of innovation systems that prompt the implementation of mission-oriented innovation when considering social capital, and the innovation capability of existing regional innovation systems and social capital in Sweden. The results indicate that the local public sector’s role is particularly important in the regional innovation system, as is the collaboration between multiple actors across sectors for mission-oriented innovation. Therefore, the regional innovation system in Sweden can be an incubator for innovation as the system has localized interactive learning, including public-private cooperation. In terms of social capital, social capital in Sweden embodies high levels of general trust and particularized trust. However, the hybrid nature of social capital in Sweden shows no significant effect, while other types of social capital have a positive relation to innovation with international collaborators.
