Abstract

Objective: The objective of the present study was to elucidate the learning outcome of students who engaged in discharge support practical training.

Methods: Subjects were 16 nursing students who engaged in discharge support practical training at fourth grade. Qualitative inductive analysis was performed using the students’ practical training records and final papers.

Results: The following five categories were identified as the learning outcome of discharge support practical training: “understanding patients and families who try to envision their future lives while experiencing anxiety”, “paying attention to the feelings of patients and their families”, “team-building within multiple professions in order to enable smooth transitions in care settings”, “involvement that enables patients to resume independent daily living”, and “identifying one’s own study issues through self-reflection”.

Conclusion: Students learned a wide range of items including the emotions of patients approaching discharge and their families, the attitude and behavior of nurses, the actuals of multidisciplinary cooperation, and specific support skills. The underlying factors for these results were thought to be a well-developed guidance system, preparation of discharge support plans, and readiness of students for practical training.
