Abstract
With a conditional matching-to-sample task including selective sample cue of sequential color stimuli, 9 pigeons were trained to respond to the left / right key corresponding to the sample cue. Experiments were conducted for three groups of pigeons. The temporal location of the sample cue in sequential stimuli was varied across the groups. Pigeons of the Group F were trained with the task, in which the first stimulus of the sequential stimuli was the cue for their correct responses. Pigeons of Group C were trained with the task, in which the second stimulus of the sequential stimuli was the cue for their correct responses. Pigeons of Group E were trained with the task, in which the third (end) stimulus of the sequential stimuli was the cue for their correct responses. The best performance was obtained in the Group E, with the average performance in Group F. In contrast, Group C did not show such a good performance. These results suggest that pigeons can selectively use a sample cue of the sequential stimuli based on its temporal location and that it is difficult for pigeons to use the middle sample cue of sequential stimuli.
