Abstract

A variety of methods of olfactory testing are carried out in Japan and overseas, but the development of test kits for olfactory screening is not sufficient. The necessary elements for a test kit for olfactory screening include i) an odorant that stimulates only the sense of smell, ii) that it can be performed with simple operating procedures, and iii) multiple times (tens to hundreds of times or more) can be used, iv) Can be used for several months. Thus, we have developed a “brief smell confirmation kit” consisting of Verdox (green apple-like odor) and Sotolon (caramel-like odor). This test kit satisfied the requirements of the above-mentioned test kit for olfactory screening, and incorporates two concentrations for those under 50 years old and those over 50 years old. The present review mentioned the possibility of application to COVID-19 infection, early diagnosis of dementia/neurodegenerative disease, postoperative recurrence diagnosis of eosinophilic sinusitis, and olfactory training.
