Dynamic detection of damages in CFRP laminates using small-diameter FBG sensors

Abstract
When there are damages inside of a CFRP laminate, the waveform of the ultrasonic wave that passes through the damages changes. Hence, the authors are attempting to detect damages in CFRP laminates nondestructively using ultrasonic waves. A piezo-ceramic on the surface of the laminate generates Lamb waves, and the propagated waves are detected with a small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor of 52 micrometer in diameter embedded in the laminate. Then, the waveforms are analyzed to identify the damages. In this research, the velocities of the ultrasonic waves propagated in the laminates were calculated theoretically, and the response of the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensor depending on the ultrasonic wavelength was simulated. From the results, the optimum gauge length of the FBG to detect ultrasonic waves was determined. Furthermore, the relationship between the damage conditions and the waveforms was confirmed through the simulation of the wave propagation in the laminate using the finite element method.
