Abstract
Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) is an effective approach for the conceptual design of a space plane, because the disciplines that characterize the space plane have strong interdependencies with each other. Although numerical analyses used in these disciplines have been shifting toward more complex ones, it is often computationally impractical to apply them in the framework of MDO. Therefore, this study formulates and solves an MDO of a Single-Stage-To-Orbit (SSTO) space plane by constructing metamodels of computationally expensive numerical analyses. By investigating the characteristics of the obtained optimal solution, guidelines for the conceptual design of the SSTO space plane are discussed.
