Abstract
Nano-dynamic behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT) and polymer matrix CNT composites have been investigated utilizing piezo-driving holder mounted in transmission electron microscope (TEM) to clarify fundamental mechanical characteristics of CNT composites. CNTs are fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, and approximately 40 nm in diameter. Results obtained are as follows: 1) CVD-CNTs show crystallographic defects after buckling under axial compression. 2) CVD-CNTs show reversible deformation in bending tests, however, they fractured by strong bending in case of radius of curvature of 20 to 30 nm at neutral axis.
