Abstract
The present experimental work aims to clarify the flow structure of downburst. A gravity current was generated in the horizontal uniform flow in a water tank in order to simulate actual downburst. Its instantaneous velocity fields were measured through the PIV method and then the vorticity fields were calculated from them. The maximum velocity was observed in the downstream diverging flow. Though the vortices were formed at both the fronts of upstream and downstream diverging flows, the diameter and the circulation of the downstream vortex were almost twice as large as those of the downstream one.
