Abstract
Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow on a rotating sphere bounded by the meridional lines, is studied numerically in the presence of a modelled wind forcing. The stable westward intensification of meridional flow is found when the wind forcing is weak. As the forcing is intensified, however, a temporal oscillation emerges in the flow field. The dependence of the oscillation amplitude on the forcing strength indicates that a Hopf bifurcation to oscillating solutions occurs at the bifurcation point.
