Abstract
Finite-amplitude traveling wave solutions propagating in the azimuthal direction bifurcate supercritically at the critical points of the stationary state of Boussinesq thermal convection in a rotating spherical shell. We study the torques on the inner and outer boundaries due to these finite-amplitude solutions, where the Taylor number is from 522 to 5002 and the Rayleigh number is from about 1500 to 10000. When the Taylor number is smaller than 2002 the inner boundary is torqued in the prograde direction, while it is in the retrograde direction for the Taylor number larger than 2002. Especially when the Taylor number is 2002, the direction of the torques changes continuously from retrograde to prograde as the Rayleigh number is increased.
