Abstract

The ballast settlement of a ballasted track with a railjoint is simulated using a coupling method of wheel-track vibration analysis and ballast settlement analysis. The wheel-track vibration is modeled as an assembly of beams, masses and dashpots, while the ballast settlement phenomena is modeled with elastoplastic FEM with cyclic densification model. The influence of the existence of a rail irregularities around a railjoint on the simulated ballast settlement is investigated through numerical tests. The rail irregularities with a typical shape observed in a rail around a railjoint causes a relatively large permanent displacement of ballast surface near a railjoint. In the track without rail irregularities, the ballast settlement at the railjoint is smaller than one beneath the sleepers near a railjoint.
